Letters: Time to gain credibility

Though the government may be helpless in getting back the money deposited in foreign banks for want of reciprocal tax treaties, it is good that it has worked out a strategy to unearth the scandal (“Govt to unveil strategy on black money today” January 25). The government can gain some credibility by being serious about this issue. For that, it needs to disclose what it has done to prevent this loot, what systemic and legal measures it has adopted, whether it has identified the suspects and is tracking them to ascertain their modus operandi and how far it has succeeded.
After all, the practice of depositing money abroad is as old as our Independence. Some of this money is now being used for drug peddling and funding terrorist activities. It is also clear that the guilty are mostly influential people. If the government cannot say what it has already done to check this plunder even now, it will weaken its case to wipe out the evil in the future.
