NHRC for probe into Silchar central jail

The NHRC in a release here today alleged that the jail was housing more than 530 prisoners, while it has a capacity of only 429.

There was deficiency in providing nutritious food and and daily requirements to the inmates, it said.

Following reports of poor maintenance and living condition in the jail, Gauhati High Court chief justice A K Goel accompanied by senior judges had recently visited it to take stock of the situation.
