Press Trust of India Bangalore

Six persons were arrested from suburban Ramanagara and Mattaradoddigudda areas while another was shot at by police when he and his associate ignored warnings to surrender and attacked a constable with a sharp-edged weapon at Jnanabharathi University campus where they were spotted, police said.

The man has been hospitalised and a hunt was on for his associate who managed to flee, DCP (West) S N Siddaramappa told PTI.

"The police fired two rounds at Rama and his associate and one round in the air," he said adding Rama and his associate had come to Jnanabharati campus in search of sandalwood.

The 21-year-old student of National Law School of India University from Nepal was allegedly raped by an eight-member gang deep inside the wooded campus area of the Bangalore University on the night of October 13 after the gang waylaid the car in which she was going with her boyfriend.

Earlier, announcing the arrest of six, Police Commissioner Jyotiprakash Mirji told reporters that the eight were involved in illegal felling of trees and had come to the university campus in search of sandalwood on the night of the crime.

Asked about preliminary investigations showing no external injuries on the girl, Mirji said police were awaiting the medical report which would give a correct picture.

He said the second year law student in her complaint had stated that an eight-member gang had attacked them, forcibly took her away into the forest and raped her after sending her boyfriend back to their car.
