Bigger share of supplement allowance to heavy weight sports

The Sports Ministry has decided to allot a bigger share of its per day food supplements allowance to the heavy and middle weight sportspersons from disciplines such as boxing and wrestling while keeping a considerably reduced amount for the likes of shooters and archers.

For all those sportspersons attending national coaching camps, guidelines have been issued for the provision, procurement and distribution of food supplements by the Sports Ministry.

The sportspersons of heavy and middle weight power events (70-125kg) like boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, athletic throw have been alloted Rs 700 per day, but in comparison, only Rs 400 will be provided to the athletes of the same sports of low weight events (less than 70kg category).
 

Even Endurance, Sprints and Team events' athletes will get Rs 400 as supplement charges per day.

Endurance category issued by the Ministry includes long distance running, swimming, walking, marathon, road cycling, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, badminton, squash, tennis, table tennis, diving, sepaktakraw and wushu.

Sprints comprises sprinters, jumpers, sprint swimming, sprint cycling, while football, hockey, basketball, handball, kabaddi, volleyball, gymnastics, equestrian and yachting come under the Team event.

However, the lowest amount of Rs 300 as supplement charges have been kept for the shooters, archers, fencers and golfers.

The Ministry has also said that the requirement of the food supplements for national campers would be decided on scientific basis.

"Due care would be taken to ensure that the food supplements are free from banned substances and National Sports Federations would ensure that these are procured only from the manufacturers or their authorised suppliers," the Sports Ministry release stated.

"NSFs would supply the food supplements procured, to the Heads of SAI centres, where national camps are held, when these camps are held in non-SAI centres/stadia in Delhi, the supplements procured would be supplied to the in-charge of the venues of the national camps.

"The Heads of SAI centres and in-charges would take it in their stock registers and distribute the food supplements to the campers as per their requirement/requests," the release further added.
