A black deer has died of illness in a zoo here, taking the toll to five in the past 10 days, an official said today.

Kanpur Zoo director K Thomas said the black deer which was sent here from Hamirpur died last night, adding that the black buck was ill for the past 15 days.

Earlier, four deer, aged between 12 to 15 years, had died of illness, he said.

The post-mortem report of these four deer had confirmed that the death was natural and caused due to failure in respiratory system, Thomas said.

Last year, 38 black bucks had fallen prey to wild dogs in the zoo, which had led to a massive hue and cry, leading to suspension of some zoo employees.
