Residents of a southern Chinese town say several thousand people took the streets, some clashing with police, to protest a proposed garbage incinerating plant.
The demonstration in Boluo county, in Guangdong province, is the latest example showing that Chinese have become increasingly wary of the environmental hazards of such projects but still lack public forums to voice their concerns.
Three demonstrators told The Associated Press over the phone that they are worried that the project would pollute the air and a nearby river.
Populous Chinese cities are also facing challenges with properly disposing of trash. Experts have suggested high-standard incinerators as a solution.
