A police sub-inspector was today caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000 from a farmer in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.

"Sub-inspector Chintaram Patel, posted at Raipuria police station in Jhabua district, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000 from a tribal farmer, Ballu Dahima," said inspector Rajkumar Sarraf of Lokayukta police.

The police officer allegedly told Dahima that a complaint of stealing ice-cream from a shop had been registered against five children, one of them Dahima's grandson.

To sort out the matter, Patel initially asked for Rs 10,000; later he agreed to accept Rs 8,000.

As he was arrested while accepting the money in the police station's premises today, Lokayukta police found that no case of ice-cream theft had been registered.

"The story of theft seems to be bogus," said inspector Sarraf.

A case was registered against Patel under the Prevention of Corruption Act and further probe was on.
