Demand for Dana Sangma case transfer unwarranted: police

Press Trust of India Gurgaon

The transfer of investigations into the death of Sangma to "any other agency is not warranted" and the probe is being conducted "diligently, fairly and intensely," the Gurgaon police said in a report filed yesterday.

Dana's elder sister Balsame M Sangma had earlier approached the High Court in May, pleading that the case should be transferred to the CBI as Gurgaon police was allegedly not carrying out investigations properly.

She also alleged that discrimination was meted out by the staff of Amity University, where Dana was studying, to students from the North-East and its management was "very influential," because of which the case should be transferred to CBI.

In its report yesterday, the Gurgaon police stated that the Special Investigation Team, headed by ACP Ravinder Tomar, had found that "no discrimination was ever made by the Amity University staff with students belonging to North-Eastern states."

"As per the report of the cyber cell of police department, the internet of mobile of Dana M Silva Sangma was found to be working," it added.

Her roommate had also told the police that the deceased was found using mobile in the examination hall, it said.

Dana allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on April 24 after being caught cheating using a mobile phone while writing an examination paper.

The police will submit its full report only after receiving the report of her mobile phone and SIM card from CFSL, Chandigarh, and a report on her answer sheet and admission form from FSL, Madhuban.

Meanwhile, the council of Dana's sister termed the report by Gurgaon police as an "eye-wash."

The High Court has fixed July 16 as the next date for hearing the case.
