Five engineering students drown in quarry pit

Four engineering students drowned in a quarry pit filled with water near Chikkajala here today, when they tried to save fellow classmate from drowning, police said.

Five of the eight students at the spot went swimming while three others stayed away. Two friends who knew swimming entered the deep water, while the other three were near the shore, DCP North-East Bangalore Vikas Kumar Vikas said.

One of them slipped and to save him others also entered

the water and could not come out, he said.

Officials said four bodies have been recovered and efforts are on to find another. They said water level was about 70 to 80 feet.
