The Centre has asked Maharashtra government to ensure that the ban on the participation of children in the Dahi Handi festival is strictly implemented.

In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has said she was told by Mumbai MP Poonam Mahajan that every troupe consists of very young children some of whom get hurt during the exercise.

Bombay high court today banned the participation of children below 18 years of age in the formation of human pyramids during the popular 'Dahi Handi' festival on the grounds that it led to fatal accidents.
