Five inmates of a jail here were allegedly injured when police lathi-charged them after their protest over removal of a place of worship turned violent.

Two of the injured prisoners, Rajkumar and Ajay Kumar, were taken to Jehanabad Sadar Hospital and later shifted back to the jail amid protest by their relatives who had gathered there to protest the lathi-charge.

Jehanabad Sadar Sub-divisional Officer Manoranjan Kumar said the lathi-charge occurred at the newly built jail at Kako block headquarters in the district.

"Some prisoners constructed a make-shift place of worship inside the jail premises, which the administration removed. They started protesting and indulged in brick-batting. We used mild force to stop them in which five persons were injured," the SDO said.

The situation was under control now, he added.
