Judicial Magistrate Mayakrishnan today held an inquiry at a spot near here where a 39-year-old criminal was shot dead by police in an alleged encounter.

Police said Kittappa, involved in more than 30 criminal cases including murder, was shot dead last night when he tried to attack a police team which went in search of him in connection with a criminal case with 'petrol bombs'.

Kittappa, who was found hiding in a house at K.N.A Nagar, hurled bombs at the team which opened fire, police said.

The Judicial Magistrate enquired with local people about the matter and also visited the government hospital here and held inquiry with some police personnel who had been admitted with injuries sustained when Kittappa attacked them, police said.

As per National Human Rights Commission guidelines, a judicial magistrate inquiry should be held following an encounter death.
