Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today intervened to help a pregnant woman with fever at a hospital in Firozabad that earlier made her run from pillar to post for want of medication.

After media reports about the woman being made to shuttle between district women's hospital and trauma centre in Firozabad in UP, Gandhi contacted the hospital's Chief Medical Officer and sought to know the reason for the delay.

"I'm appalled at this level of negligence towards a pregnant woman. The CMO of the District Hospital, Firozabad, Shri P. Anand, was contacted for a detailed investigation regarding the delay (sic)," she tweeted.

"...Eventually, the woman was given medication for her fever, & now has been called for a follow-up visit in a few days. The CMO has assured that there will be no further delay in her treatment. She will be referred to another specialist, if required," she said in a series of tweets.

According to the reports, the woman was running a fever for past three days was made to run to and fro the women's hospital and the trauma centre and that led to a heated argument between her relatives and the CMO of the hospital and other staff.

She was reportedly provided treatment after a call from the district magistrate's office.

Other instances of medical apathy came to light earlier this week when a man in Kanpur lost his son, who died on his shoulders, after he was turned away by a government hospital in the city.

Similarly, in Odisha there were two incidents, in Kalahandi and Balasore each, where because of lack of ambulances dead bodies had to be carried on shoulders for several kilometres.
