Mizoram government (Police and Excise and Narcotics departments) and the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the apex Mizo body, today inked an agreement to jointly combat drug menace in the state.

Minister for Excise and Narcotics and Home R Lalzirliana, addressing the agreement signing function, said firm and decisive action would be taken against drug traffickers.

Lalzirliana said though the YMA volunteers, while incurring huge expenses, had never asked for financial assistance from the government in their activities against drugs and narcotics, the state government sanctioned Rs 30 lakh to the central committee of the YMA.

He also said additional budgetary allocation to the tune of Rs 70 lakh would be made for the Police department and Rs 30 lakh for the Excise and Narcotics department for the expenses in fighting drugs and narcotics menace.

The minister later torched seized drugs worth over Rs 1.21 crore in the presence of senior home, police, excise and narcotics departments officials and YMA leaders.

Meetings were organised in all district headquarters, jointly by government officials and local YMA leaders today on the issue.
