A nine-year-old boy has secured third place in an international Quran competition held at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia recently, his father claimed today.

"My son Amir bagged the third place by reciting Quran in the international competition, which was held under the supervision of Saudi Arabia King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz at Jeddah on June 29," the Imam of a mosque Mohammad Raees told PTI.

He said that his son Amir has been given a shield, 9,000 riyals and an appreciation letter as prize on achieving the rare feat among 2,000 contestants who had participated in the competition from different countries at Jeddah.

Raees said that his son learnt to recite verses of the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, in merely 18 months, when he was seven years old.

He said that Amir is a student at a local madrassa.

The Imam said that leading lights of the district and clerics were eagerly waiting for Amir to return from Saudi Arabia to rejoice his success.
