Police Martyrs' Memorial football tournament from June 30

Press Trust of India Srinagar

The tournament will be played from June 30 to July 16, Kumar told reporters here today.

"So far 56 teams have registered themselves, 46 are from different corners of the state and 10 are from outside the state," Kumar said.

The prominent teams from outside the state, taking part in the tournament this year, include Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttrakhand, West Bengal Police, Punjab University, Punjab Police, BSF and CRPF, the DGP informed.

The tournament was initially held in memory of Inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Baba, who was killed in a militant attack in 1997. However, it was later rechristened as Police Martyrs' Memorial Tournament and is organised by state police in association with Jammu and Kashmir Football association every year.

Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, will inaugurate the tournament on June 30, the DGP said.

The 17-day long tournament played on the knock-out basis, that will witness 57 matches in all, will be held at Bakshi stadium and Polo ground in the city.
