A powerful 'pipe bomb', similar to the one recovered recently near the residence of Union Minister V Narayanaswamy in Puducherry, was found near a compound wall of a private wholesale market at nearby Uthangudi today, police said.

They said it was packed with explosive chemicals and both sides sealed with a 'coupling net' and connected to a wire.

The other end of the wire was found connected to a PET jar filled with petrol.

Had the bomb exploded, it could have caused some damage to the office of a Tamil daily near the market, they said.

Police said the bomb had been removed and taken to a Quarry Pit for being defused.

Various police units, including bomb disposal squad, Special Investigation Unit, Q-branch and Anti-Naxal wing inspected the spot.
