People's Welfare Front activists were today taken into custody for trying to take out a procession to the Raj Nivas here, demanding that the head of a private school and AINRC functionary against whom a case of sexual harassment had already been booked, be arrested.

CPI's Puducherry State committee secretary and convenor of PWF, R Viswanathan, said the Front had already urged the Lt Governor that the case be handed over to CBI for an impartial and speedy investigation and sought his intervention.

"We have no faith in the local police although the case has been handed to CB-CID wing," he said, addressing the activists.

On December 5, ruling All India NR Congress (AINRC) functionary, K S P Ramesh, was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for alleged sexual harassment of a minor girl, a school student.

The activists shouted slogans against the government and police for "delaying the arrest of Ramesh."

CPI-M's Puducherry unit secretary R Rajangam and functionaries of other parties attached to the front, comprising CPI, CPI (M), VCK, and MDMK, were among those taken into custody, police said.
