Taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi over his proposed 'mahayatra' in Uttar Pradesh, BJP today claimed the exercise is aimed at helping Samajwadi Party as he wanted to return the favour after its leaders worked to ensure his win from Amethi in the Lok Sabha polls.

The saffron party said Congress has no relevance in the state and its only purpose is to cut into the anti-incumbency votes to help non-BJP parties.

"This mahayatra is to help SP win by cutting into anti- incumbency votes. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav had done Rahul Gandhi a favour by ensuring his win in the Lok Sabha poll and he is now trying to return the favour.

"Congress has no relevance in the state. Rahul is out on bail in Rs 5,000 crore National Herald case and wants to eat into anti-incumbency votes. He wants to stop BJP's developmental and good governance agenda in Uttar Pradesh," its National Secretary Shrikant Sharma said.

Congress had received support from SP and BSP during its 10-year-rule at the Centre and is now working to help them, he said.

Congress today announced that Gandhi will embark on a mahayatra from Deoria in eastern Uttar Pradesh to Delhi from September 6 traversing as many as 233 Assembly constituencies to reach out to people ahead of crucial polls slated early next year.
