Independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid and some of his supporters were today detained by the police when they tried to gherao Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's residence to protest the killing of a man allegedly by a Village Defense Committee (VDC) member in Rajouri.

Rashid was also demanding disbanding of the VDC and constitution of a commission to investigate the "crimes committed by its members."

Rashid was taken into custody by the police at Gupkar as he, along with some of the supporters of his Awami Ittehad Party (AIP),was trying to marchtowards the CM's residence.

They were protesting the killing of Ishtyaq Ahmed -- a youth leader of opposition National Conference (NC)-- who was allegedly shot dead by a VDC member after the duo had an altercation over distribution of ration in Rajouri district.

"We wanted to gherao the chief minister's residence to tell Mufti sahib to disband the VDCs.

"We also wanted to tell him to constitute a commission to investigate the crimes committed by the members of these committees," Rashid told reporters.

He also said, "RSS was ruling the state" and asked Sayeed to snap ties with his coalition partner BJP.
