Sugar rises on uptick in demand

Sugar prices climbed by up to Rs 230 per quintal at the wholesale sugar market today due to increased offtake by bulk consumers as well as retailers.

Traders said pick up in demand from bulk consumers and retailers mainly led to rise in the sweetener prices.

They said volume ov business, however, remained thin due to tight fund positions in the market following government's move to withdraw notes of higher denominations.

Sugar ready M-30 and S-30 edged higher to Rs 3,850-4,100 and Rs 3,840-4,090 from previous levels of Rs 3,800-3,870 and Rs 3,800-3,860 per quintal respectively.

Mill delivery M-30 and S-30 followed suit and traded traded at Rs 3,550-3,740 and Rs 3,540-3,730 as compared to previous levels of Rs 3,550-3,690 and Rs 3,530-3,680 per quintal respectively.

Sugar ready: M-30 Rs 3,850-4,100, S-30 Rs 3,840-4,090.

Mill delivery: M-30 Rs 3,550-3,740, S-30 Rs 3,540-3,730.
