The population of tigers at the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in the district has risen to 60, according to provisional figures of a recent census.

"According to a census conducted recently in seven forest ranges in the STR, the tiger population has increased to 60, as against 50 during the previous census," Director of the reserve, Rajkumar told reporters here.

He said only one tiger on an average died every year -- due to illness, while crossing the water courses with its cubs, or during a fight with other tigers.

He said no poaching of tigers has taken place in the reserve and no feline has attacked a human so far inside the forest area.

He cautioned the public crossing the forest area and requested them to avoid travelling alone between 6 pm and 7 am due to movement of animals.
