V R Sharma quits JSPL, joins Bangladeshi firm as steel head

Steel industry veteran V R Sharma has quit JSPL to join Bangladesh-based Abul Khair Group as Group Chief Executive Officer in charge of steel and power business.

"I have quit JSPL and have joined Abul Khair Group of Bangladesh as Group CEO (Steel and Power Business). The group has diversified manufacturing facilities in steel, ceramics, cement, cigarettes, milk products and chocolates etc," Sharma said.

Sharma was working with Naveen Jindal-led Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) as Deputy Managing Director and CEO (steel business) before joining the Bangladeshi firm.

In steel, Abul Khair Group produce long, flat and coated products. The group features among top three business houses in Bangladesh.
 

The group has a 2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) steel plant in Chittagong and is adding another 2.5 mtpa capacity with a hot strip mill.

It is also setting up another 2 mtpa steel-making facility with downstream facilities in the Middle East and Africa with an aim to take its overall manufacturing capacity to 6-6.5 mtpa.

The group is also adding a 300 MW power plant and a Gas based DRI Plant.

Sharma has more than 30 years of industry experience. He started his career with a Spanish firm and then moved to a company in Libya.

After coming back to India in 1990, he worked with companies like Lloyd Steel, Bhushan Steel and Ispat Industries before joining JSPL.
