WFI eager to revive wrestling in rural centres: Singh

Press Trust of India Bahraich

Singh, who is also a Member of Parliament, informed that the federation was working out on a plan to promote the wrestling so that more and more people at the grassroot level could take up the traditional sport.

In the first phase of the plan, a wrestling academy has been set up in Nandini Nagar of Gonda district, where senior national tournament would take place between November 9 and 12, the president said.

Besides the trial of national wrestling team, the grapplers would take on eight leading wrestlers from Pakistan during this tournament, he added.

Singh said that since national and international contests are held on mat, it is important that proper infrastructure be provided at the rural centres to nurture the budding talent.

He said that a request in this regard has been made to the state government in addition to providing wrestling coaches at all the centres.
