Acc Wing Lining Up Catalytic Convertors

This development assumes importance if the division comes out with the new emission norms next April, when most of the two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturers in the country may be forced to phase out two-stroke engines.

ACC plans to invest around Rs 360 crore in a phased manner for the commercial exploitation of the project. The cement major is working with major two-stroke manufacturers like Bajaj Auto, TVS Suzuki and Hero Motors on the project.

It has already started trial production of the convertors. The catalytic convertors have been tried out at the Automobile Research Association of India, Pune. Besides, it has been proved successful in real life conditions.

 

The actual commercial viability of the project, however, depends on the actual introduction of the new emmission norms by the environment ministry next year. The auto-manufacturers' association has been crying hoarse for more time on grounds that there was no tested emission control technology in the country to meet the emission standards, and if the new norms are actually introduced they will be forced to phase out the two-stroke engines.
