The Indian Dairy Association (IDA), the apex body of the dairy sector, has urged the government to renegotiate the existing bound rates of import duty on milk products at the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Seattle to curb duty-free imports of subsidised dairy products.

In a communication to the minister of state for agriculture Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav, the association's president Animesh Banerjee said if the duty-free imports continued unabated, the country's milk farmers would have to resort to distress sales in the ensuing flush season. This might jeopardise the white revolution that had made India the world's highest milk producer.

Skim milk powder, the main base for the production of milk and milk products in the dairy industry, was put under open general licence with zero duty when several items were shifted from the restricted list under liberalisation policy.
