Globalstar And Vsnl Sign Mou

GISS is a joint venture company established in India by Hyundai Electronics, Hyundai Corporation, Crompton Greaves and Pertech Computers Ltd, which will provide GlobalStar satellite telephonic services in India. Globalstar is a consortium of twelve major telecom services providers, equipment manufacturers and space organisations. The consortium includes names such as Qualcomm, France Telecom, Daimler-Benz Aerospace and Hyundai.

Hyundai holds exclusive rights for providing Globalstar mobile communication services in 17 countries including India. GISS would provide mobile communication services under licence from Hyundai. GISS has since obtained the go-ahead from FIPB for starting its operations in India. A formal license from the DoT will be obtained after the announcement of the Satellite Policy.

 

Globalstar is a low-earth orbit satellite based telecommunication system that will offer low cost, high quality digital mobile satellite telephonic and other services like paging, fax, position locations, globally and specially to areas underserved or not served by existing telecommunication infrastructure ie, remote villages, inhospitable terrain etc. The Globalstar system would consist of 48 operational satellites and eight spare satellites in orbit and 150 gateway earthstations. The three Globalstar India gateways would cover the whole of India and its neighbouring countries.
