Hind Aegis, Btu In Talks

BSCAL

Hindustan Aegis LPG, promoted by the NRI-Chandarias, and the Bombay Taximen's Union (BTU) are negotiating to entter into a LPG supply arrangement for the 55,000 eaxis playing in the city.

The deal is, however, subject to a ruling by the Bombay High Court. BTU is caught in a bind as the court has taken a serious note on the environmental problems in the city.

The problem can only be solved if the taxis switch over to environment-friendly fuel like compressed natural gas (CNG) or LPG as a fuel in the interest of reducing pollution in the city.

S K Hazra, director of Hindustan Aegis LPG and president of Indian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Industtries Association said "the taximen's union has approached us for providing them with better solutions as the Bombay High Court wants the connversion of a number of diesel/petrol driven taxis to those running on LPG or compressed natural gas. However, with very few CNG dispensing units in the city, it is difficult to convert these taxis. Even the costt of conversion is prohibitive."

Hindustan Aegis, with its 20,000 tonne storage capacity in Mumbai will be able to supply fuel to these taxis.
