Private cellular operators yesterday hit back at Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL)'s statement that implementation of the calling party pays regime would cause huge losses to the company.

Against a projected annual loss of Rs 200 crore for both MTNL and the department of telecom (DoT), MTNL alone would increase its revenues from calls between fixed and mobile networks from Rs 31.9 crore to Rs 60.12 crore immediately after the calling party pays regime was implemented, the operators said.

Sources said the operators had decided to go public with these arguments even as the matter was pending before the High Court since it had a bearing on the ability of companies to raise funds.
