Land Allotment For Tanneries Underway In Wb

West Bengal expedites allotment of sites for tannery owners at the proposed leather complex at Bantala in the eastern fringe of Calcutta. The state government expects to complete the land distribution procedures soon.
The proposed leather complex will be allotted 1000-acre land and would envisage a total cost of Rs 285 crore. The project would be implemented on a build-own-operate basis by the Dalmias and hence would have minimum involvement of the state government.
However, the state government has sought funds from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the project.

Out of Rs 285 crore of the project cost the Union government would provide Rs 65 crore for the effluent treatment plant which would be centrally located.
Chief minister, Jyoti Basu yesterday made a review of the progress of work at the proposed project.
Besides Basu, those present at the meeting included Asim Dasgupta, finance minister, Buddhadev Bhattacharya, minister for home (police), Surya Kanta Misra, panchayat minister, Bidyut Ganguly, industries minister, Abdul Rezzak Molla, minister for Sundarbans development, S N Roy, principal secretary, industries department among others.
S N Roy, principal secretary, industries department said the Supreme Court had extended the time limit by two years for shifting the tanneries currently located in various parts of the city to the leather complex at Bantala.
Out of 1000 acre of land only 150 acre held under law suits is yet to be acquired reforms department has now started its process for distribution of land among the entrepreneurs.
