Sail Registers 5% Growth In First Half Steel Production

Crude steel production stood at 5.4 million tonne, while 6.13 million tonnes of hot metal were produced during the same
period. Between April and Septe-mber 1996, SAIL plants at Bhilai, Durgapur, Rourkela Bokaro and Salem, including subsidiaries at IISCO and Visveswaraya Iron and Steel at Bhadravati registered a growth of 6 per cent in hot metal production, four per cent in crude steel output. The largest private sector steel producer Tata Steel achieved a 0.02 per cent rise in saleable steel production to 1.36 mt .
It sold 1.126 mt in the first half of the current fiscal. At 1.70 mt there was a 0.09 per cent increase in hot metal production, however the crude steel production remain unchanged at 1.52 mt in the first half of the current fiscal.
The Bhilai steel plant produced 2.2 million tonnes (mt) of hot metal, 2.09 mt of crude steel and 1.79 mt of salebale steel with a growth of 2 per cent in hot metal, 3 per cent in crude steel and 2 per cent in saleable steel over the same period last year.
Production at the Durgapur steel plant, where the modernisation work is nearly complete, touched 0.7 mt of hot metal, a 15 per cent rise over last year, 0.56 mt of crude steel, up 11 per cent over last year and 0.5 mt of saleable steel, a rise of 10 per cent over the previous year.
At Rourkela which is at the final stages of update, hot metal production rose by 9 per cent to reach 0.64 mt while crude steel production rose 7 per cent to touch 0.58 mt. Saleable steel production increased by 19 per cent to touch 0.56 mt. Bokaro steel plant produced 2.06 mt of hot metal recording a growth of of 9 per cent while crude steel production at 1.81 mt went up by 2 per cent and saleable steel production at 1.49 mt rose by two per cent.
The Burnpur works of IISCo produced 0.37 mt of hot metal, 0.17 mt of crude steel and 0.16 mt of saleable steel recording a increase of six per cent of crude steel and two per cent of saleable steel.
