Shares Move In Narrow Range

Equities fluctuated in a narrow range before firming towards the end of the session on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday. Mirroring the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1045.80, touched the days high of 1050.55, declined to a low of 1038.75 and closed at 1048.40, a net gain of 2.90 points over the previous close of 1045.50. The Midcap index also moved up by 0.35 points to 1088.05 against the previous close of 1087.70.
The total turnover on the NSE was Rs 1265.08 crore. The SBI scrip topped the list of turnover registering Rs 400.80 crore, followed by ITC Rs 275.02 crore, Reliance Rs 213.44 crore, Tisco Rs 72.83 crore, ACC Rs 45.13 crore, Bhel Rs 27.73 crore, Telco Rs 27.21 crore, BSES Rs 15.16 crore, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd Rs 13.62 crore, L&T Rs 12.79 crore, Bajaj Auto Rs 11.71 crore, BPCL Rs 10.52 crore, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd Rs 7.99 crore, Indian Rayon Rs 6.59 crore, Hind Lever Rs 6.38 crore, HDFC Rs 4.97 crore, Guj Ambuja Rs 4.65 crore, Colgate Rs 4.51 crore, Century Textile Rs 4.08 crore, ICICI Rs 3.72 crore, BoB (Rs 6pd up) 3.71 crore, Bata Rs 3.16 crore, M&M Rs 2.90 crore, OBC Rs 2.81 crore and Essel Packaging Rs 2.69 crore.

The top five gainers were Cochin Refineries, Indian Rayon and Ind Ltd, ICICI, SCICI and TVS Suzuki. The top losers were Dr Reddys Lab, Bajaj Auto, ACC, Essar Steel and Reliance Capital.
Meanwhile, share prices declined marginally on the Over the Counter Exchange of India (Otcei) following lack of buying support from investors and institutional investors.
The OTC index opened at 83.72 and closed at 83.94 showing a decrease of 0.73 points over the previous close of 84.67.
The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 45.01 lakh involving 85,171 shares debentures. Major contribution was from the listed equity contributing Rs 43.57 lakh (84,600 shares).
Among the other segments listed debentures contributed Rs 1.35 lakh (521 debentures). In listed equities active trading was witnessed in Aryan Pesticides where 35,600 shares were traded valuing 33.08 lakh.
