Staff Union Joins Dot Chorus Against Trai

BSCAL

The Bhartiya Telecom Employees Federation (BTEF) yesterday called for review of the powers delegated to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) just days after the department of telecommunications (DoT) initiated the process of clipping Trais wings.

The employees federation accused Trai of being biased towards private telecom service providers to the detriment of the department of telecommunications and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL).

Trai, which was constituted to act as a referee is acting more like a player...The present situation has arisen out of a unholy and planned conspiracy by the multinational companies, Trai and top echelons of department of telecommunications/MTNL to destabilise the government telecom industry, the BTEF alleged.

Stressing that the entry of department of telecommunications /MTNL into the cellular telephony sector would allow the consumer to get more efficient service at better rates, the BTEF said and added that current cellular services monopoly has led to the adoption of unfair trade practices by the private sector.

The federation, in a statement, termed the authoritys decision to stay Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd s entry into the cellular telephony sector as an impetuous one.
