Hindalco is India's largest integrated aluminium producer. The ongoing expansion, modernisation and diversification programme incorporates the introduction of the state of the art technology and installation of various equipment to ensure improved product quality and efficiency.
It has achieved a record metal production of 95449 MT against 79276 MT during the corresponding period of the previous year. All of its seven pot-lines are presently operating at full capacity utilisation of 2,10,000 MT. Considerable progress has been achieved in the expansion of Aluminium smelter capacity from 2,10,000 to 2,42,000 MT which is slated to be commissioned in early 1998.

An addition alumina refining capacity of 1,00,000 MT has been commissioned in October 1997 and better capacity utilisation to the tune of installed capacity of 4,50,000 M of alumina is expected to be achieved in the second half of the current financial year. Hindalco has registered an impressive sales growth of 35.9 percent to Rs. 751 crore in the first half of 1997-98. Operating profit has also increased by 60 % to Rs. 338.2 crore. The company's net sales at Rs. 6980 million is up 35.9 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year's Rs. 5136 million backed by a robust growth in the sales volume.
In the current fiscal the company will be adding a 75 mw captive power plant, which is expected to reduce Hindalco' dependence on state grid. The company will also be adding a seventh pot-line with capacity of 32,000 tonne that will take its over all annual smelting capacity to 2.42 lakh tonne by the end of this financial year. And by the end of this fiscal the company is expected increase production of primary metal by 24.5 per cent to Rs. 2.08 lakh tonne in 1997-98.
