Sun Microsystems sets up ControlCenter in Chennai

| Sun Microsystems has set up its ControlCenter, third in the world and first in Asia Pacific, in Chennai. |
| The centre will manage and monitor customers' information technology (IT) infrastructure and processes. The company's other two centres are located in Linlithgow (US) and Scotland (Europe). |
| The 24*7 ControlCenter in Chennai has already started functioning and will employ about 300 skilled engineers who will integrate seamlessly with its two ControlCentres in the US and Europe, employing around 600 engineers. The company declined to provide details about the investments in the Chennai facility. |
| Addressing a press conference, Jeya Kumar, vice-president, (services), Asia Pacific, Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd, said Sun considered locating its ControlCenter for the Asia Pacific region in Japan and China before choosing Chennai. |
| As scalability is a key factor in ControlCenter operations, Chennai was found to be matching the requirements with regard to skills, language and access to resources, he added. |
| Joyjit Chatterji, country director ( Sun services), Sun Microsystems India Pvt Ltd, said the ControlCenter initiative was based on the feedback from its customers. |
| While the conventional service model focused on post-incidence services, this ControlCenter operations would focus on predictive management of applications, infrastructure, networks and security systems. |
| ControlCenter, a key component of Sun, will have the capability to receive data for customer site events, filter actionable events and respond to customers within 15 minutes, besides managing changes at the customer sites and monitoring and managing performance and inventory rate. |
| The scope of the services will be heterogeneous including core database administration, server management, web administration, operating system administration and networking device monitoring and management. |
| Customers have to sign separate agreements with Sun to avail themselves of the services. The cost will vary depending on the service. The company had signed two mid-tier companies in India to provide such services. |
