Baltimore bridge collapse: Crews continue removing twisted steel, concrete

As divers assisted crews with the complicated and meticulous operation of removing the steel and concrete from the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, some near the site took time on Easter Sunday to reflect on the six workers presumed to have plunged to their deaths. As cranes periodically swung into place and workers measured and cut the steel to prepare to lift sections of twisted steel, Rev. Ako Walker held a Mass in Spanish at Sacred Heart of Jesus, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) up the Patapsco River from the collapse. Yes we can rebuild a bridge, but we have to look at the way in which migrant workers are treated and how best we can improve their situation as they come to the United States of America, Walker said of the men who were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and were patching potholes. Dive teams were in the river Sunday surveying parts of the bridge underwater and checking on the ship to ensure it can be safely floated away once the wreckage is

Allegations of plot to kill Sikh extremist in US: India forms probe panel

India has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to probe allegations relating to a conspiracy to kill a Sikh extremist on American soil. The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved in the plot. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India constituted a high-level inquiry committee on November 18 to look into all the relevant aspects of the matter. "We have already said that during the course of discussions with the US on bilateral security cooperation, the US side shared some inputs pertaining to nexus between organised criminals, gun runners, terrorists and others," Bagchi said. He was replying to a media query on the matter. "We had also indicated that India takes such inputs seriously since they impinge on our national security interests as well, and relevant departments were already

US depends on China for its modern way of life, says Vivek Ramaswamy

The US cannot "get tough" with China because it depends on it for a modern way of life, Indian-American Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has said, asserting that Washington needs to declare economic independence from Beijing. The 38-year-old multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur made the comment on Wednesday during the Republican Party's third presidential debate in Miami, Florida. Indian-American presidential candidate Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott participated in the debate. Former US president Donald Trump, who is leading the race, did not participate in the debate again. Here's why we can't get tough with China. It's because we depend on them for our modern way of life. And we have to declare economic independence from our enemy," Ramaswamy said. "That's the Declaration of Independence that Thomas Jefferson, at the age of 33, would have signed. And today, if he were ..

As migration surges in US, funds aren't there for humanitarian response: UN

Countries in the Americas are reeling as the flow of migrants reaches historic levels, but international funds simply aren't there for humanitarian needs, a United Nations official said. Ugochi Daniels, deputy director of operations for the International Organisation for Migration, said a larger and coordinated regional effort is necessary for a longer term solution to the steady movement of vulnerable people toward the United States. But other global crises among them the war in Ukraine, conflict in Sudan, Morocco's earthquake have pulled global funds away, Daniels said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press. The U.N. estimated that this year through August, it needed USD 55.2 billion to take on compounding global crises, but it received funds for only 71 per cent of that. A growing number of countries like Panama and Costa Rica are pleading for international aid in handling the flood of migrants, though Daniels would not say who should pay the tab. Obviously, it's

America's poor math skills raise alarms over global competitiveness

Like a lot of high school students, Kevin Tran loves superheroes, though perhaps for different reasons than his classmates. They're all insanely smart. In their regular jobs they're engineers, they're scientists, said Tran, 17. And you can't do any of those things without math. Tran also loves math. This summer, he studied calculus five hours a day with other high schoolers in a program at Northeastern University. But Tran and his friends are not the norm. Many Americans joke about how bad they are at math, and already abysmal scores on standardized math tests are falling even further. The nation needs people who are good at math, employers say, in the same way motion picture mortals need superheroes. They say America's poor math performance isn't funny. It's a threat to the nation's global economic competitiveness and national security. The advances in technology that are going to drive where the world goes in the next 50 years are going to come from other countries, because they

Trump campaign reports raising more than $7 million after Georgia booking

For former President Donald Trump, a picture is worth... more than USD 7 million. Trump's campaign says he has raised USD 7.1 million since Thursday when he was booked at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia on charges that he illegally schemed to overturn the 2020 election in the state and became the first former president in US history to ever have a mug shot taken. Spokesman Steven Cheung said that, on Friday alone, the campaign brought in USD 4.18 million its highest-grossing day to date. The record haul underscores how Trump's legal woes have been a fundraising boon for his campaign, even as his political operation has spent tens of millions on his defence. The mounting legal charges have also failed to dent Trump's standing in the Republican presidential primary, with the former president now routinely beating his rivals by 30 to 50 points in polls. While Trump described his appearance Thursday as a terrible experience and said posing for the historic mug shot was not a ...

Alabama wants to execute prisoner by making him breathe only nitrogen

Alabama is seeking to become the first state to execute a prisoner by making him breathe pure nitrogen. The Alabama attorney general's office on Friday asked the state Supreme Court to set an execution date for death row inmate Kenneth Smith. Alabama plans to put him to death by nitrogen hypoxia, an execution method that is authorized in three states but has never been used. Nitrogen hypoxia is caused by forcing the inmate to breathe only nitrogen, depriving them of oxygen and causing them to pass out and die, according to the theory. Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air inhaled by humans and is harmless when inhaled with oxygen. Critics have likened the untested method to human experimentation. Alabama authorized nitrogen hypoxia in 2018 but the state has not attempted to use it until now to carry out a death sentence. Oklahoma and Mississippi have also authorized nitrogen hypoxia. Alabama has been working for several years to develop the execution method, but has disclosed little ab

Nokia Q2 profits fall as clients in North America shun investments

Wireless and fixed-network equipment maker Nokia on Thursday reported a fall in second quarter profit as clients especially in North America postponed investments due to a slowdown in economic growth and rising financing costs. The Espoo, Finland-based company reported net profit of 414 million euros (USD 464 million) for the April-June period, down 29 per cent from 585 million euros a year earlier.
