Sri Lankan court orders to seek Interpol Red Notice against Basil Rajapaksa

A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday ordered authorities to take necessary steps to obtain an Interpol Red Notice against former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa in connection with the alleged misuse of funds belonging to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. The Fort Magistrate's Court asked that warrants be issued for the arrest of 71-year-old Rajapaksa in English and Sinhala following submissions made in court over an alleged misappropriation of public funds in 2014. The orders against Rajapaksa, the younger brother of former presidents Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, were issued following submissions made by the CID regarding the ongoing investigation. Mumbai Police arrests 367 absconders in 3 months; 18 on run for over 20 yrs

Mumbai Police have arrested 367 persons wanted in various criminal cases during a special drive conducted between January and March this year, an official said on Thursday. Among those arrested, 18 accused were on the run for more than 20 years, whereas 302 were absconding for at least five years, an official said. The operation was launched under the direction of police commissioner Deven Bharti, he said, adding that many of the arrested accused were using fake identities and living in other states. The Azad Maidan Police Station traced an accused who had been absconding since 1987, while the N M Joshi Marg Police Station nabbed a person in a case dating back to 1988. Both had been living under assumed names outside Maharashtra, the police official said. The Delhi Police has arrested five members of the Aarzoo-Anmol Bishnoi-Harry Boxer syndicate in connection with the murder of a rival gangster in Chandigarh earlier this month, police sources said on Wednesday. Inderpreet Singh alias Parry, a former close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was killed on December 1 in Sector 26 shortly after he left a club. The Goa police on Tuesday detained Ajay Gupta, one of the four owners of 'Birch by Romeo Lane' nightclub, where a devastating fire claimed the lives of 25 persons. The state police had earlier issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Gupta and another owner Surinder Kumar Khosla. "We have detained Ajay Gupta, one of the owners of the nightclub. This is the sixth person to be held in connection with the case," a Goa police spokesperson said. "Earlier, an LOC was issued against him as a police team had failed to find him at his Delhi residence when it visited it there," he said, adding that Gupta was later found in the national capital and was detained. NIA arrests 8th accused in connection with Red Fort blast conspiracy probe

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made the eighth arrest in connection with last month's car blast near the Red Fort, officials said on Tuesday. An NIA spokesperson said a team from Delhi has arrested key accused Dr Bilal Naseer Malla of Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir. He was arrested from the national capital. The NIA has found Bilal's involvement in the conspiracy behind the terrorist attack that killed 11 people and injured several others in the Red Fort area on November 10, a statement said. "As per NIA investigations, Bilal had knowingly harboured the deceased accused Umar Un Nabi by providing him logistical support. He is also accused of destruction of evidence related to the terrorist attack," it added. The NIA is continuing with its investigation into the conspiracy behind the deadly blast. The anti-terror agency is working closely with various central and state agencies to unravel all the threads of the conspiracy.

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force arrested a man from Lucknow on Tuesday in connection with illegal storage and trade of banned cough syrup and other drugs containing codeine, police said. According to a statement issued by the office of the Director General of Police, the Special Task Force (STF) had been receiving information about the illegal storage and trade of Phensedyl cough syrup and other drugs containing codeine for use as intoxicants. The informants revealed that these drugs were being sent to other parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, West Bengal and Bangladesh.
