Signatories of the tech accord, which was announced at the Munich Security Conference, include companies that are building generative AI models used to create content, including OpenAI
The International Publishers' Association (IPA) president Karine Pansa accused big technology companies of using copyrighted content "without permission" for AI-generated materials and urged publishers to raise their concerns. Pansa, who recently visited India for the ongoing New Delhi World Book Fair, said the IPA is holding discussions with its member countries, including India, on how to deal with the big tech companies for infringing publishers' copyrights by "reproducing their materials without permission" for AI training. "The big tech companies are using the content available on the internet to regenerate the new content without consent, and part of this content is books, the content of which belongs to the publishers. It is being used without their permission, consent, licensed payment, and remuneration. "So it is an important part of the IPA's job to discuss how each country is going to deal with this new technology and this new copyright infringement," Pansa told PTI, addi

Aviation regulator DGCA on Friday issued a show cause notice to Air India regarding the incident of an 80-year-old passenger who collapsed and later died after walking from a plane to the terminal at the Mumbai airport as he did not get a wheelchair. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had sought a report from Air India on the incident. On Friday, DGCA said it has issued a show cause notice to Air India for not complying with the provisions of the relevant Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR). The airline has been asked to give its response in seven days. In the wake of the incident, the regulator has also directed all airlines to ensure that an adequate number of wheelchairs are available for passengers who require assistance during embarking or disembarking from the aircraft during their journey.

Global cybercrime damage costs are expected to grow by 15 per cent per year over the next three years, reaching $10.5 trillion annually by 2025
Nearly 59 per cent of large organisations (those with over 1,000 employees) surveyed in India are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) actively in their businesses, according to a new research commissioned by IBM. The 'IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023' found early adopters are leading the way, with 74 per cent of those Indian enterprises already working with AI, having accelerated such investments in the past 24 months in areas like R&D and workforce reskilling. Ongoing challenges for AI adoption include hiring employees with the right skill sets and ethical concerns, inhibiting businesses from adopting AI technologies into their operations. For 2024, addressing these inhibitors would be a priority like providing people with the relevant skills to work with AI and having a robust AI governance framework, according to the report. "The increase in AI adoption and investments by Indian enterprises is a good indicator that they are already experiencing the benefits of AI. However, ...

Microsoft said Wednesday that U.S. adversaries chiefly Iran and North Korea and to a lesser extent Russia and China are beginning to use generative artificial intelligence to mount or organize offensive cyber operations. The technology giant said it detected and disrupted, in collaboration with business partner OpenAI, threats that used or attempted to exploit AI technology they had developed. In a blog post, the Redmond, Washington, company said the techniques were early-stage and neither particularly novel or unique but that it was important to expose them publicly as U.S. rivals leverage large-language models to expand their ability to breach networks and conduct influence operations. Cybersecurity firms have long used machine-learning on defense, principally to detect anomalous behavior in networks. But criminals and offensive hackers use it as well, and the introduction of large-language models led by OpenAI's ChatGPT upped that game of cat-and-mouse. Microsoft has invested
Called memory controls, the feature is currently under testing by OpenAI with a broader rollout expected in near future
At least six major technology companies are planning to sign an agreement this week that would guide how they try to put a stop to the use of artificial intelligence tools to disrupt democratic elections. The upcoming event at the Munich Security Conference in Germany comes as more than 50 countries are due to hold national elections in 2024. Attempts at AI-generated election interference have already begun, such as when AI robocalls that mimicked US President Joe Biden's voice tried to discourage people from voting in New Hampshire's primary election last month. "In a critical year for global elections, technology companies are working on an accord to combat the deceptive use of AI targeted at voters," said a joint statement from several companies on Tuesday. "Adobe, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, TikTok and others are working jointly toward progress on this shared objective and we hope to finalize and present details on Friday at the Munich Security Conference." The companies .
