AI firms will need to start reporting their safety tests to US govt

The Biden administration will start implementing a new requirement for the developers of major artificial intelligence systems to disclose their safety test results to the government. The White House AI Council is scheduled to meet on Monday to review progress made on the executive order that President Joe Biden signed three months ago to manage the fast-evolving technology. Chief among the 90-day goals from the order was a mandate under the Defence Production Act that AI companies share vital information with the Commerce Department, including safety tests. Ben Buchanan, the White House special adviser on AI, said in an interview that the government wants "to know AI systems are safe before they're released to the public the president has been very clear that companies need to meet that bar. The software companies are committed to a set of categories for the safety tests, but companies do not yet have to comply with a common standard on the tests. The government's National Instit

Apac biz to triple spends on GenAI to $3.4 bn in 2024: Infosys Research

Asia Pacific businesses are sprucing up investments in generative AI (GenAI) and projected to nearly triple spends on this technology to USD 3.4 billion in 2024 across Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, India, and Singapore, according to Infosys Research. While the spending trails North America, APAC's adoption, effectiveness, and growth are among the highest globally, it said. "Companies across Asia-Pacific are quickly ramping up investments in generative AI and entering a higher stage of maturity," the IT major's research arm, Infosys Knowledge Institute (IKI), said in the research. While APAC companies currently lag behind their North American counterparts in GenAI spending, the research forecasts a bigger increase than in any other region, that is 140 per cent. "This translates to an estimated USD 3.4 billion to be invested across Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, India, and Singapore," it said. AI-model developed to detect extremist users, ISIS-related content on X

Using tweets from 2009-2021, researchers have developed a predictive model that can detect extremist users and content related to the militant group 'Islamic State' (ISIS). Their work could help social media companies identify and eventually restrict such accounts in a timelier manner and abate their impact on online communities, they said. The researchers from the Pennsylvania State University, US, identified potential propaganda messages and their characteristics and developed an image classifier to find the most frequent categories of images attached to tweets about ISIS. "The Islamic State group and its affiliates, sympathisers and followers continue to manipulate online communities to spread extremist propaganda," said Younes Karimi, a graduate student at the university pursuing a doctorate in informatics and the first author of the paper published in the journal Social Media Analysis and Mining. Apart from the ISIS-linked tweets they used for analysis, the researchers further

Meity's Republic Day tableau focuses on AI for social empowerment

India leveraging the power of artificial intelligence in healthcare, logistics and education to further social empowerment was the theme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's Republic Day parade tableau. The tractor portion of the tableau, which rolled down the Kartavya Path on Friday, showcased a "female robot" in a thinking posture. The base of the tractor depicted a 3D scale model of a chip. Circuit design on the sides with LED lights showcased the energy that artificial intelligence carries to take India towards development. Artificial intelligence is a kinetic enabler to leap-frog traditional development barriers and catalyse large-scale socio-economic transformation in India, according to an official statement. It said artificial intelligence is expected to add USD 967 billion to the Indian economy by 2035 and USD 450-500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, accounting for 10 per cent of the country's USD 5 trillion GDP target. FTC launches inquiry into AI deals such as Microsoft's OpenAI partnership

US antitrust enforcers are opening an investigation into the relationships between leading artificial intelligence startups such as ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and Anthropic and the tech giants that have invested billions of dollars into them. We're scrutinising whether these ties enable dominant firms to exert undue influence or gain privileged access in ways that could undermine fair competition, said Lina Khan, chair of the US Federal Trade Commission, in opening remarks at a Thursday AI forum. The FTC said it has issued compulsory orders to five companies requiring them to provide information regarding investments and partnerships. All of the leading cloud providers Amazon, Google and Microsoft have made huge investments into AI firms, most notably Microsoft's close partnership with OpenAI. Both Google and Amazon have made multibillion-dollar deals with Anthropic, another San Francisco-based AI startup formed by former leaders at OpenAI. The European Union and the United Kingdom hav
