Nearly 21,000 people have been affected by flood in Assam, an official bulletin said on Wednesday. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 20,900 people have been hit due to flooding in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts. Over 20,700 people are suffering in Lakhimpur while 160 people have been affected in Dhemaji, it said. Currently, 19 villages have been inundated and crops in over 13.5 hectares of land have been damaged, the bulletin said. However, in other districts including Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dima Hasao, Dibrugarh and Golaghat districts, floodwaters have not entered houses but embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged. Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a joint venture of NLC India and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, is setting up a coal-based supercritical thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,980 MW (3 x 660 MW) at Ghatampur Tehsil in Kanpur Nagar District, Uttar Pradesh, with 51:49 equity participation. NUPPL and the Assam government on Tuesday announced the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) to ensure a steady and reliable power supply of 492 megawatts (MW) to the state from the former's 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant. Assam has registered a decline of 5.95 per cent in school enrolment, with a total of 70,95,759 students registering this year as against 75,44,956 for 2022-23, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Monday. According to the Student Database Management Information System (SDMIS), there has been a shortfall of 4,49,197 students compared to the previous year, he told reporters here. Officials concerned have been asked to verify and analyse the reasons behind the decline in enrolment, the minister said. Some reasons cited by the district officials include students taking admission in other private schools not registered on the UDISE portal, clearing duplicate enrolment from the database, and migration, Pegu added.

An earthquake of 3.6 magnitude hit the central part of Assam on Sunday morning, an official bulletin said. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or injury to anyone or damage to property, it said. A National Center for Seismology report said the latest quake was recorded at 11:35 am with the epicentre in Sonitpur district on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river. The depth of the quake was five km, it said. The exact location of the epicentre of the earthquake is around 150 km northeast of Guwahati, near Tezpur town in north central Assam. People in the neighbouring Darrang, Lakhimpur and Udalguri districts also felt the tremor, besides those in Morigaon, Nagaon and West Karbi Anglong on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river.
