MNF will return to power in Mizoram, hopeful of bagging 25-35 seats: CM

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Sunday asserted that his party, the Mizo National Front, will return to power and bag 25-35 seats in the upcoming polls for the 40-member assembly. He also claimed that the Congress, which was ousted by the MNF in the 2018 polls, could draw a blank in this year's election to be held on November 7. We are busy preparing ourselves for the upcoming assembly polls. We are really hopeful that we shall be able to win the majority and form the government (again)... I am expecting between 25 and 35 seats, Zoramthanga told PTI Video in an interview. As far as the Congress is concerned, if they can get one or two seats, we'll deem them lucky; otherwise they can get none... The BJP, at the most, might get two seats and they may also get nil... and our opponent, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), if they cross 10 (seats), the party will be lucky... Therefore, for us, there is a lot of chance to form the government, he said. The ruling MNF is vying for a ..

MP polls: BJP leans on welfare push amid headwinds in Chambal-Gwalior

The BJP's big push to change its fortunes in the region, which had spurned it in the last Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, seems to be facing some headwinds as regional factors take precedence and the Congress' pitch for change challenges the ruling party's narrative woven around the planks of development and welfarism. Across several constituencies of the Chambal-Gwalior region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi largely draws unreserved praise for his stewardship of the country but many of the same voters also talk of the need for "badlav" (change) in the state, offering mixed views on Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government and voicing a litany of complaints. If there is some acknowledgement about his government's claim of improvement in conditions of road, electricity and water supply, many also question its overall record and express wariness with Chouhan's 18-year-old reign, save for the Congress' brief 15-month-old tenure under Kamal Nath after the 2018 polls, since ...

Money seized during I-T raids in Karnataka was to be used in polls: BJP

Madhya Pradesh BJP chief V D Sharma on Saturday claimed that the Rs 42 crore recovered by the I-T department during raids on contractors in Karnataka on Friday was meant for next month's polls in five states as he sought to link the seizure with the Congress. Assembly elections will be held in MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram between November 7 and 30, and the counting of votes will be on December 3. This money was found on the premises of contractor Ambikapathy, who on behalf of the Congress, had falsely charged the then BJP government in Karnataka as a 40 per cent commission government, Sharma said while addressing a press conference here. Despite being voted to power in the southern state, Sharma alleged, the Congress could not prove the allegation of 40 per cent commission government. The Income Tax (I-T) Department recovered more than Rs 42 crore in cash, stashed in a residential premise in Bengaluru, on Friday as part of its tax evasion searches against som

As poll heat rises, MP CM engages in war of words with Priyanka, Kamal Nath

A war of words broke out between Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who targeted each other over the implementation of public welfare schemes in the state. While Gandhi accused Chouhan of misleading people and asserted that there was no dictatorship in the Congress unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the chief minister asked why public welfare schemes of his government were stopped when the Kamal Nath-led Congress dispensation was in power in the state. Nath, who is Congress's state unit chief, also hit out at Chouhan, accusing him of using inappropriate language against the Gandhi family and said his party does not give false promises. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Chouhan targeted the Congress and Priyanka Gandhi over the party's promises of free education and cash incentives to students in Madhya Pradesh and alleged that Nath was cheating even the Gandhi family by forcing them to make false .

BJP threatens mega rally against corruption in MGNREGA in WB, TMC counters

BJP on Friday threatened to hold a massive rally in the city after Durga Puja against the alleged corruption in the utilisation of MGNREGA funds in rural Bengal. It provoked a sharp retort from the ruling TMC, which accused the saffron camp of diverting attention from legitimate demands for the release of overdue state funds. The state BJP indicated that the date and time of the proposed protest rally will be announced soon. West Bengal BJP president, Sukanta Majumdar said that the party will mobilise the underprivileged rural communities deprived of benefits of various central schemes due to the alleged corruption by local TMC leaders. "There are thousands of cases of corruption by local TMC leaders which have deprived the people of rural Bengal of the benefits of various central schemes, including housing under PM Awas Yojna and access to toilets under the Swachh Bharat scheme," he said. Majumdar's assertions followed TMC's protest in New Delhi and the five-day sit-in outside

New revelations in Adani row indicate Rs 12K cr siphoned off in 2-yrs: Cong

The Congress on Friday alleged that fresh revelations in the Adani issue by a foreign publication indicate that "more than Rs 12,000 crore may have been siphoned out of the country in two years". Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a statement, dubbed it the "biggest scam" of modern India. He claimed that this was "not a metaphorical loot" but "literally theft" from the pockets of crores of Indians. He also accused the ruling BJP government of "helping" the Adani group acquire assets and "the BJP is kept flush with electoral bond funds which allows it to buy MLAs at will and break opposition parties". There was no immediate reaction available from the Adani group on the allegations. "This is the biggest scam of modern India. It combines greed and heartlessness with a cold contempt for the people of India. It is based on the conviction that there is no scam that cannot be 'managed' and that there is no issue that cannot be diverted from. "But the Shahenshah is mistaken. In

Excise policy: AAP protests near BJP headquarters against Singh's arrest

The Aam Aadmi Party workers on Friday protested near BJP headquarters here against the arrest of senior leader Sanjay Singh in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the scrapped Delhi excise policy. Raising slogans against the party, the AAP workers tried to proceed towards BJP headquarters on DDU Marg but the police and paramilitary personnel stopped them. The protest came hours after the Delhi High Court agreed to list during the day a plea by Singh against his arrest. The matter was mentioned for urgent hearing by a lawyer for the Rajya Sabha MP before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula. Singh's lawyer said proper grounds of arrest were not provided to him. On October 10, a trial court remanded Singh, arrested earlier this month, to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate till October 13. The ED's money laundering case stems from the CBI FIR. According to the CBI and the ED, irregularities were committed while .
