Market breadth turns negative

Trading turned volatile as key equity indices reversed trend and slipped into negative terrain in mid-morning trade. At 11:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 113.73 points or 0.30% at 38,273.02. The Nifty 50 index was down 29.65 points or 0.26% at 11,491.40. Weakness in index pivotals, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank and TCS, put pressure on bourses. Negative global cues dented investors' sentiment.

Fitch cuts India growth forecast for FY20 to 6.8 pc on weak momentum

Fitch Ratings Friday cut India's GDP growth forecast for the next fiscal to 6.8 per cent from 7 per cent estimated earlier on weaker than expected economic momentum. In its latest Global Economic Outlook, Fitch also slashed GDP growth forecast for current fiscal ending March 2019 to 6.9 per cent from 7.2 per cent projected in the December edition. The 6.9 per cent estimate is a notch lower than 7 per cent growth estimated by the Central Statiscs Office (CSO) for the current fiscal. Indian economy grew 7.2 per cent in 2017-18 fiscal. "While we have cut our growth forecasts for the next fiscal year (FY20, ending March 2020) on weaker than expected momentum, we still see Indian GDP growth to hold up reasonably well at 6.8 per cent followed by 7.1 per cent in FY21," Fitch said. Sensex slips 63 points in morning trading, Nifty around 11,500

Equity benchmark indices opened on a moderate note but quickly slipped into the negative territory on Friday following selling pressure.At 11:15 am, the BSE S & P Sensex was down 63 points at 38,324 while the NSE Nifty 50 was down 24 points at 11,497.On the sectoral front, petro, media and IT stocks traded in the red while pharma, banking, auto and infrastructure stocks gained marginally.SpiceJet traded nearly 8 per cent higher following reports that many pilots of cash-strapped Jet Airways are keen to switch sides.Among other gainers on the National Stock Exchange were Indiabulls Housing Finance, Godrej Properties, Infosys, Wipro and Hindalco. Sensex rises over 100 pts on robust FII buying

Rising for the ninth straight session, market benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 119 points in early trade Friday led by gains in banking, metal and auto stocks amid sustained foreign fund inflow. Gains were, however, capped tracking Asian markets as investors turned cautious after the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, experts said. The 30-share index was trading 119.52 points, or 0.31 per cent, higher to 38,506.27. The index began the session on a firm note at 38,452.47 and hit the session's high of 38,526.71 on steady buying by foreign funds as well as retail investors. The NSE Nifty also advanced by 36.35 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 11,557.40. Major gainers were Bharti Airtel, L&T, Yes Bank, Tata Steel, NTPC, Asian Paint, Bajaj Auto, HDFC, Axis Bank and State Bank of India, rising up to 3.03 per cent. Rupee rises 6 paise to 68.57 vs USD in early trade

The rupee appreciated by 6 paise to 68.57 against the US dollar in opening trade Friday, driven by sustained foreign fund inflows and higher opening of domestic equities. The rupee opened at 68.60 at the interbank forex market, then gained further ground and touched 68.57, displaying gains of 6 paise over its last close. The rupee Wednesday had recovered by 13 paise to close at 68.83 against the US dollar. The forex market was closed Thursday on account of Holi. Forex dealers said, selling of the American currency by exporters and positive opening in domestic equities supported the rupee. Fresh foreign fund inflows and easing crude prices also supported the rupee, they added.
