Air India temporarily stops flights to Europe, 5 destinations in US, Canada

Air India has stopped flight operations to Europe and five destinations in the US and Canada amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Besides, flights of Air India Express and IndiGo to the Middle East have been impacted, and some of them have been diverted. With Iran launching a missile attack on a US airbase in Qatar, tensions have mounted in the region, and a few countries, including Qatar, have closed their airspace. Air India's long-haul flights to Europe and North America overfly the Middle East, and the airspace curbs have disrupted its services. Amid the developing situation in the Middle East, Air India said it has ceased all operations to the region as well as to and from the East Coast of North America and Europe with immediate effect, until further notice. Services have been temporarily stopped to European cities as well as to four US airports -- New York, Newark, Chicago and Washington -- and to Toronto (Canada). "Our India-bound flights from North America are ..

PM Modi's presence at G7 summit a 'reflection of global leadership': Carney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attendance at the G7 summit is a reflection of the size and dynamism of the Indian economy and the leadership position India plays, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said. In terms of Prime Minister Modi's attendance at the G7, Prime Minister Modi has attended every G7 since 2018, which is a reflection of the size of the Indian economy, the dynamism of the Indian economy, Indian technology, the leadership position India plays in a host of venues from G20 and beyond, Carney said at a press conference as the G7 Leaders' Summit wrapped up here. So as chair of the G7, hosting the prime minister in that context is entirely natural, entirely consistent. Canada to hit Nato spending target early, reduce reliance on US: PM Carney

Canada will meet NATO's military spending guideline by early next year and diversify defence spending away from the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday, asserting that Washington no longer plays a predominant role on the world stage. The announcement means Canada will achieve NATO's spending target of 2 per cent of gross domestic product five years earlier than previously planned. Our military infrastructure and equipment have aged, hindering our military preparedness," Carney said. Only one of our four submarines is seaworthy. Less than half of our maritime fleet and land vehicles are operational. More broadly, we are too reliant on the United States. According to NATO figures, Canada was estimated to be spending 1.33 per cent of GDP on its military budget in 2023, below the 2 per cent target that NATO countries have set for themselves. Canada previously said it was on track to meet NATO's target by the end of the decade. Our goal is to protect Canadians, not to

After Canada PM Carney's invite, PM Modi confirms attendance at G7 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he will attend the G7 summit in Canada this month after receiving an invitation from his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney during their first phone conversation. Carney's invitation to Modi to attend the outreach sessions of the G7 Summit signalled Ottawa's intent to repair the ties with New Delhi that plummeted to an all-time low over the killing of a Khalistani separatist. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Modi and Carney acknowledged the "deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada and reaffirmed their commitment to work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests". It said Modi conveyed that he looks forward to their meeting at the summit. Prime Minister Modi accepted the invitation that came over a week before the summit of the influential grouping kicks off. The summit will be held in Canada's Alberta province from June 15 to 17. It is learnt that the phone call was initiated by the

NATO on cusp of accepting Trump's 5% defence investment demand, says Rutte

Most U.S. allies at NATO endorse President Donald Trump's demand that they invest 5% of gross domestic product on their defense needs and are ready to ramp up security spending even more, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Thursday. There's broad support, Rutte told reporters after chairing a meeting of NATO defense ministers at the alliance's Brussels headquarters. We are really close, he said, and added that he has total confidence that we will get there by the next NATO summit in three weeks. European allies and Canada have already been investing heavily in their armed forces, as well as on weapons and ammunition, since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At the same time, some have balked at U.S. demands to invest 5% of GDP on defense 3.5% on core military spending and 1.5% on the roads, bridges, airfields and sea ports needed to deploy armies more quickly. Still struggling to meet the old goal: In 2023, as Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine entered i
