Chennai police to launch Artificial Intelligence powered hi-tech drone unit

Drones equipped with hi-tech cameras and powered by Artificial Intelligence would form part of an exclusive 'police drone unit' set to be launched soon, the Greater Chennai police on Saturday. The unit to be launched shall comprise six swift action surveillance drones, a heavy-lift multirotor drone and two long range surveillance drones, they said adding they have a range of 5-10 kilometers. The drones have multiple uses, like assessing crowd for management purpose and identifying accused using 'facial recognition feature.' The drones with features ranging from Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to thermal cameras are expected to help authorities in more than one way. Taking an appropriate decision by precisely monitoring the ground situation and using them even during night are among the uses. Launch of apps for use by police authorities including one to tackle/prevent cyber crimes are on the cards, a senior police officer said.

Online sealing done to prevent further damage to crude oil pipeline: CPCL

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation have completed online sealing of the crude oil pipeline to prevent any further damage following the leakage that occurred last week on the Nagore Pattinacherry coast in Tamil Nadu, officials said on Sunday. Currently, the officials of the Indian Oil group company are engaged in the flushing of the pipeline in a controlled manner to make the pipeline "hydrocarbon free". "No abnormality was observed today," CPCL said in its update today. A mobile oil recovery unit and oil dispersants were used to avoid any impact to the environment due to the leakage, it said. Officials from CPCL and IOCL were working round the clock while the Nagapattinam district administration has been extending its full support to the operation. Sea level rise this century may disproportionately affect certain Asian megacities as well as western tropical Pacific islands and the western Indian Ocean, according to a new research. The research team identified several Asian megacities that may face especially significant risks by 2100 if society continued to emit high levels of greenhouse gases: Chennai, Kolkata, Yangon, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and Manila. The study looked at the effects of natural sea level fluctuations on the projected rise due to climate change, it said. It did so by mapping sea level hotspots around the globe. The study is published in the journal Nature Climate Change. Scientists have long known that sea levels will rise with increasing ocean temperatures, largely because water expands when it warms and melting ice sheets release more water into the oceans. IIT Madras ties up with Denmark for next-gen fuels, energy systems research

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Wednesday inked a pact with Denmark in the presence of Danish Crown Prince Frederik Andre Henrik Christian to take up research projects on next-generation fuels and energy systems under the 'Indo-Danish Green Strategic Partnership'. Besides the Danish Crown Prince, senior representatives of IIT Madras, Denmark Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard, Ambassador of Denmark to India Freddy Svane and Tamil Nadu industries department, Additional Chief Secretary S Krishnan were present during the signing of the agreement between IIT Madras and the Denmark government. G20 Education Working Group meet to focus on inclusive tech-based learning

The G20 Education Working Group (EdWG), which is set to meet here on February 1 and 2, will focus on ensuring foundational literacy and numeracy especially in the context of blended learning, making technology-enabled learning more inclusive, qualitative and collaborative at every level. Besides, it will also focus on building capacities, promoting lifelong learning in the context of future of work, strengthening research, promoting innovation through richer collaboration and partnerships. CBI arrests Chennai Income Tax officer, CA in Rs 2,25,000 bribery case

The CBI has arrested an Income Tax officer and a chartered accountant in Chennai for their alleged involvement in a Rs 2.25 lakh bribery case, officials said Saturday. The bureau's action came after an FIR was registered against CPWD's superintendent engineer Sanjay Chinchghare, assistant valuation officer D.Manjunathan and chartered accountant Satgurudas and Suresh, the assessee and property owner, they said. Chinchghare was also posted as district valuation officer in Chennai Income Tax Valuation Cell. A case was registered by the CBI against the accused on allegations that Suresh had declared a high-value property transaction in his Income Tax return which was referred to the Income Tax Valuation Cell by National Faceless Assessment Centre, New Delhi, the officials said. Manunathan allegedly inspected the property and underlined the difference in the property value, they said.
