Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Wednesday inked a pact with Denmark in the presence of Danish Crown Prince Frederik Andre Henrik Christian to take up research projects on next-generation fuels and energy systems under the 'Indo-Danish Green Strategic Partnership'. The CBI has arrested an Income Tax officer and a chartered accountant in Chennai for their alleged involvement in a Rs 2.25 lakh bribery case, officials said Saturday. The bureau's action came after an FIR was registered against CPWD's superintendent engineer Sanjay Chinchghare, assistant valuation officer D.Manjunathan and chartered accountant Satgurudas and Suresh, the assessee and property owner, they said. Chinchghare was also posted as district valuation officer in Chennai Income Tax Valuation Cell. A case was registered by the CBI against the accused on allegations that Suresh had declared a high-value property transaction in his Income Tax return which was referred to the Income Tax Valuation Cell by National Faceless Assessment Centre, New Delhi, the officials said. Manunathan allegedly inspected the property and underlined the difference in the property value, they said. India Cements Ltd (ICL) on Thursday said fair trade regulator CCI has conducted a "search" at its office in Chennai. The Chennai-based company added that it has not committed any breach of CCI regulations. In response to a clarification sought by BSE over news reports of a raid by CCI at ICL, the company said in a filing: "Certain officials of CCI visited our office in Chennai at around 11:30 a.m. and are conducting 'search' to find out if any irregularities concerning 'Competition Commission' has occurred." However, it added that as it has not committed any breach of CCI regulations, "We do not apprehend any material impact on the Company." ICL has a total capacity of 15.5 million tonnes per annum. Its revenue for the financial year that ended on March 31, 2022 was Rs 4,713.11 crore. India Cements operates eight integrated cement plants in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan and two grinding units, one each in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
The first bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday rejected a plea from an advocate seeking to quash a Government Order (GO) passed in October this year, which mandated seeding of Aadhaar with the electricity consumer code. There is no merit in the petition, the bench of Acting Chief Justice T Raja and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy said. The bench was dismissing the petition from M L Ravi, also founder-president of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi who challenged the GO dated October 6 of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).
