China censors poverty videos in a bid to promote prosperous image

Due to propaganda and censorship, many people in China are not aware of how prevalent poverty is in the country, The New York Times reported.Recently, a video of a retiree went viral that showed what groceries she could buy with 100 yuan, or USD 14.50, roughly her monthly pension and sole source of income. The video was later deleted by Chinese authorities.A singer vented the widespread frustration among young, educated Chinese about their dire finances and gloomy job prospects, like gig work. "I wash my face every day, but my pocket is cleaner than my face," he sings. "I went to college to help rejuvenate China, not to deliver meals." His song was banned and his social media accounts were suspended, as per The New York Times.Last year, a migrant worker labouring hard to support his family, gained widespread sympathy and attention after he tested positive for COVID-19, and officials released extensive details of his movements. He became known as the hardest-working person in China. ...

Chinese FM Qin Gang calls for joint efforts against terrorism, separatism

China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Friday called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to deepen security cooperation, jointly combat the "three forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism and uphold strategic independence. In his speech at the SCO Foreign Ministers meeting in Benaulim, Goa, Qin took a veiled dig at the US, saying that the world is faced with multiple crises and challenges featuring a resurgence of the Cold War mentality, headwinds of unilateral protectionism, as well as rising hegemonism and power politics. He put forward a five-point proposal to build a closer SCO community with a shared future, one of which was that the eight member states should deepen security cooperation and jointly crack down on terrorism. "The SCO members should continue to jointly crack down on the 'three forces' of terrorism, separatism and extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organised crimes, support Afghanistan in establishing a broadly-based and

We have to take disengagement process forward: Jaishankar on Ladakh row

The relations between India and China cannot be normal if peace and tranquillity in border areas are disturbed, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. His comments at a press conference came a day after his talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. "I think the issue is that there is an abnormal position in border areas," he said, adding "we had a frank discussion about it." "We have to take the disengagement process forward," he further said. Jaishankar and Qin held bilateral talks on Thursday on the sidelines of a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The meeting between the two foreign ministers was their second in the last two months. The Chinese foreign minister visited India in March to attend a meeting of the G20 foreign ministers. During the talks, Jaishankar conveyed to his Chinese counterpart that the state of India-China relations is "abnormal" because of the lingering border row in eastern ...

Pakistan may pay for discounted Russian crude in Chinese currency: Report

Pakistan may use Chinese Yuan to pay for the 750,000 barrels of discounted Russian crude oil set to be imported in June, a media report said on Thursday, as the cash-strapped country struggles with high external debts. Pakistan placed its first order for discounted Russian crude oil last month, a decision expected to provide some relief to the people already hit by skyrocketing inflation. Pakistan will pay the price of crude most probably in China's currencyYuan and the Bank of China may play its role for transactions, a senior official of the Energy Ministry told The News International newspaper. However, the official refused to divulge the fine details about the mode of payment and the discount, stressing that it was not in the country's interest. Russia also does not want to disclose the details, fearing backlash from the other countries buying oil directly from Moscow, the official said. Russia will provide URAL crude in the test cargo, and most probably, Pakistan Refinery Limi

US to control land sales to foreigners within 100 miles of 8 military bases

Foreign citizens and companies would need U.S. government approval to buy property within 100 miles (160 kilometres) of eight military bases, under a proposed rule change that follows a Chinese firm's attempt to build a plant near an Air Force base in North Dakota. The Treasury Department's Office of Investment Security is set to propose the rule on Friday. It would give expanded powers to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which screens business deals between U.S. firms and foreign investors and can block sales or force the parties to change the terms of an agreement to protect national security. Controversy arose over plans by the Fufeng Group to build a USD 700 million wet corn milling plant about 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the Grand Forks Air Force Base, which houses both air and space operations. As opposition to the project grew, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, all Republicans, raised questions about the ...

Taiwan trade chief warns against 'unnecessary fear' of China amid tensions

Taiwan's chief trade representative says his country's semiconductor makers will expand production in the U.S. as much as they can afford to do so, but he insists Taiwan remains an ideal place for that production and other U.S. trade, business and investment, despite tensions with China. John Chen-Chung Deng spoke to The Associated Press on a visit this week to Washington, where he is leading a Taiwanese trade delegation and meeting with U.S. trade officials. Deng's visit comes at a time of intensifying efforts to harden the U.S. and Taiwanese militaries and economies against any threat from rival China. As part of this, President Joe Biden and Congress are moving to boost semiconductor production on U.S. soil in the event of any conflict disrupting exports from Asia, especially from Taiwan. Semiconductors make electronics ranging from phones to electric cars to advanced weapons run, and Taiwan produces more than 90 per cent of the world's more advanced semiconductors. At the same

US says it will allow more flights by Chinese airlines to match number

The Biden administration will let Chinese airlines add more flights to the U.S. to match the number of flights that China allows U.S. airlines to fly between the two nations. The Transportation Department said it will let Chinese airlines increase from eight to 12 U.S.-China round trips per week. That is still a fraction of the flights that were allowed between the two countries before the pandemic. The Transportation Department said in a filing Wednesday that it was acting in response to China's announcement in late December that it would lift certain restrictions on international passenger flights. China's move allowed American Airlines to add two weekly flights in March between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Shanghai, raising the combined total of round trips between the countries by U.S. carriers to 12 per week. China announced in March that after a three-year hiatus it was reopening its borders to revive tourism and boost its economy. China also relaxed visa rules
