Chidambaram offers help to Assam Congress in CAA case in Supreme Court

Former union minister and eminent lawyer P Chidambaram offered assistance in the case filed by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) at Supreme Court against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), a party spokesperson said here on Wednesday. The APCC has also initiated talks with a top law firm in Delhi to take forward its case before the apex court with more vigour, he said. Our senior leader, eminent lawyer and former union minister P Chidambaram has consented to lend us all help in our case against CAA at the Supreme Court, APCC chief spokesperson Manjit Mahanta said here. If necessary, he will also assist during the argument stage in the apex court, he added. The APCC had moved the Supreme Court against the CAA in 2019. Mahanta said APCC president Bhupen Borah had met former additional advocate general of Assam Krishna Sarma in New Delhi and discussed with her the current status of the case filed by the party's state unit before the top court. He had entrusted Corporate Law

Tharoor qualified to contest for Congress prez poll: KPCC chief Sudhakaran

Congress is a democratic party and its Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor is qualified to contest for the party's presidential election, KPCC chief K Sudhakaran said on Wednesday. Sudhakaran said if Tharoor wishes to contest the polls there is no need to blame him as the Congress is a democratic party and its members have the right to contest for the top party post. "What is there to wonder about? Is he not an eligible candidate? All the members of the Indian National Congress have the right to contest as it is a democratic party. If I wish to contest, I could also do that. The party will accept it. If I get the votes, I will win", Sudhakaran told reporters here, responding to a query. He said the Congress has the strength to address such issues through the democratic process. Amid the speculation over his possible candidature, Tharoor on Tuesday had said he would decide whether to throw his hat in the ring only after the election notification came out. At the same time, Tharoor has

Long way to go before India reverses pre-Covid 'Modi slowdown': Congress

Ahead of the release of GDP numbers for the April-June quarter, the Congress on Wednesday said the figure could show a jump and turn out to be a headline grabber but the real growth is lower than in 2018. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said there is still a long way to go before India reverses the pre-Covid "Modi slowdown". "Jumla Alert: Apr-Jun 2022 quarterly GDP figure later today could show a jump from a year ago. This headline-grabbing number will be due to low-base effect," the Congress general secretary said on Twitter. "Real GDP in Apr-Jun 2021 was lower than in Apr-Jun 2018! A long way to go before we reverse the pre-Covid Modi slowdown," Ramesh also said. The GDP numbers for the April-June quarter of 2022-23 are likely to be released on Wednesday by the government.

Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi, accuses him of making his friends richer

Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, alleging that he is "robbing" the common people to make his friends richer. Using the hashtag "#TwoIndias", the former Congress chief tweeted: "5 daily-wage earning Indians are committing suicide, every hour. Rs 85 crores is added to the wealth of PM's favourite Mitr, every hour. PM's only work -- rob from common man to make his friends richer." Gandhi has been accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of creating "two Indias" -- one for the rich and another for the poor. He has also accused the prime minister of helping his friends turn richer. Indian businessman Gautam Adani has been named the third richest person in the world in a report. Adani has become the first Asian to break into the top three of the world's wealthiest, according to the report.

Cong calls Azad 'selfish', says he left party when tasked to serve J&K

The Congress on Tuesday called Gulam Nabi Azad a "selfish person" and said he left the party when he was tasked to render his services in Jammu and Kashmir. It said Azad forgot the favours done to him by the party leadership by giving him important responsibilities in the past 50 years. "A sadhu made a cat, dog and finally a lion out of a mouse. But when the lion came to him to make sadhu a feast, he converted him back to mouse. Like this, my Congress party made someone a lion out of a mouse. If loin has bad intentions on his part, it (party) has the power to make him a mouse again. This power is in every worker of the Congress party," AICC in-charge for J-K and MP Rajani Patil said while addressing a rally here. She did not name Azad in her 'sadhu and mouse' tale though. Patil lashed out at Azad for being selfish in leaving the party at the time when the leadership tasked him to render his services in the Union territory. "When time came for you (Azad) to render services for the .

Election to Congress president's post is good for the party: Tharoor

Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said the reports about the possibility of him contesting for the party president's post were "only speculation," but said he would be able to clearly say about his candidature only after the election notification is announced. He also said an election to the top party post "is good for the party". "There is only speculation. I have not announced anything. All I said is that there should be an election and that is good for the party," Tharoor told reporters here. He said if an election is held to the Congress president's post, that will help gather the attention of the people and the party's style of functioning, ideology, values and its outlook for the country will again be discussed. "So let many candidates come forward and participate in the election in the democratically functioning party. That is good for the party," the Thiruvananthapuram MP said responding to queries. Tharoor may contest for Cong prez poll, to take final call soon: Report

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is exploring the possibility of running for the post of Congress president though he is yet to take a final call on it, sources said. They said he has not made up his mind but could take a call on it soon. While Tharoor declined to comment on whether he would throw his hat into the ring, he has written an article for the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi in which he called for a "free and fair" election. In the article, he has said ideally the party should have announced elections also for the dozen seats on the CWC itself which are supposed to be elected. "Allowing members of the party drawn from the AICC and PCC delegates to determine who will lead the party from these key positions, would have helped legitimize the incoming set of leaders and give them a credible mandate to lead the party," said Tharoor, who was among the group of 23 leaders who wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in 2020 seeking organisational reforms. "Still, electing a fresh

Senior leaders are leaving Congress as it has become 'family party': Nadda

BJP national president J P Nadda on Monday said that senior leaders with 40-50 years of association with the Congress are leaving the outfit as it has become a "family party". He claimed that the grand old party is getting weakened as it did not amalgamate regional aspirations with national aspirations and commitments. Without naming Ghulam Nabi Azad, who quit the Congress days ago, Nadda said, "Senior leaders with 40-50 years of association are leaving the party. It is because they have realised that Congress is now neither a national party nor a regional one. It has become a family party." He also listed out several regional outfits and claimed those too have become "family parties". "The Indian National Congress was such a big party. But now it is getting weakened as it didn't amalgamate regional aspirations with national aspirations and commitments," Nadda said. He gave examples of several states that the Congress had ruled for decades but is now not in power. "The BJP is not
