On poll eve, Kejriwal meets EC, alleges voter intimidation by Delhi Police

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, along with Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, met the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday and raised concerns over alleged intimidation tactics being used in the national capital ahead of the assembly polls. Talking to the media after the meeting, Kejriwal, accompanied by party leader Raghav Chadha, accused the BJP and Delhi Police of engaging in hooliganism to create an atmosphere of fear among voters. We told the EC how Delhi Police is being misused for violence and intimidation. Many people are scared, and it is possible that they may not come out to vote due to fear, he said. The former chief minister also alleged that attempts were being made to suppress voter turnout, particularly among slum dwellers. There are reports that people's fingers are being marked with black ink in an attempt to disenfranchise them, and that money and threats are being used to influence voters. We raised these concerns with the EC, Kejriwal said. He thanked the EC f

Delhi HC issues notice to CM Atishi on BJP leader's plea in defamation case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on a BJP leader's plea against the rejection of a defamation case against her over her allegations that BJP attempted to poach AAP MLAs. "Issue notice to the respondent," said Justice Vikas Mahajan. The counsel for the complainant Praveen Shankar Kapoor argued the revisional court exceeded the scope of its jurisdiction while rejecting his defamation complaint and quashing the summons issued by a magisterial court to the AAP leader to stand trial. He objected to the court "justifying" Atishi's conduct by terming her a whistleblower and sought a direction to stay the observations. According to the complaint by the former media head and spokesperson of the Delhi BJP unit, Atishi levelled baseless allegations in a press conference held on January 27 and later on April 2, 2024 against BJP by saying that it was approaching AAP's MLAs and offering them bribes to the tune of Rs 20-25 crore for switching sides. EC hits back at AAP: We are three-member body, not run by one person

Amid allegations levelled by the Aam Aadmi Party that the Election Commission is being run by CEC Rajiv Kumar, the poll panel on Tuesday hit back saying it is a three-member body which has collectively noted "repeated deliberate pressure tactics" to malign the poll authority in Delhi polls. It said an impression is being created that the EC is a single member body. In a post on X, the EC said it has decided to have constitutional restraint, absorbing such outbursts with sagacity, stoically and not to be swayed by such insinuations. Top AAP leaders, including its convenor Arvind Karjiwal, have claimed that the EC has been ignoring the BJP's alleged violations of poll code. Kejriwal had alleged that Kumar is not taking action against the BJP to bag a post-retirement assignment. Kumar demits office on February 18 on attaining the age of 65 years. Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu are the other election commissioners. "The 3-member Commission collectively noted repeated deliber

Only BJP can increase Delhi's pace of development, says Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the world today listens to India due to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while earlier the country was not taken seriously on global platforms. Participating in a roadshow in Chattarpur to seek votes for BJP candidate Kartar Singh Tanwar on the last day of campaigning for the Delhi polls, Singh said the ruling AAP has cheated the people and asserted that only the saffron party can increase the city's pace of development. "Earlier, India's voice was not taken seriously on global forums but now under the leadership of PM Modi, the world listens to India carefully. India was the 11th largest economy in 2014, now it is at the fifth position and will be at the third spot in the coming years. "Delhiites have seen that the country is growing rapidly under the leadership of PM Modi ji but due to the AAP government, Delhi has not been able to develop at the same pace. The people of Delhi have been constantly mislead and deceived," .
