A group of 101 farmers will resume on January 21 their march to Delhi from the Shambhu border point to press the government to accept their demands, including a legal guarantee for minimum support price for crops, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said on Thursday. The "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers earlier made three attempts to head towards Delhi on foot on December 6, December 8 and December 14, last year at the Shambhu border. They were not allowed to proceed by security personnel in Haryana. The proposed waste-to-energy plant in Bawana has taken centre stage ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections with the local residents raising environmental and health concerns and a section threatening to boycott the polls if the project proceeds. The plant has been planned on a 15-acre site near the Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF) for hazardous waste in DSIDC Sector 5. The Congress Tuesday released a list of 15 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, fielding former Union minister Krishna Tirath from Patel Nagar and councillor Ariba Khan from Okhla. The party also replaced its candidate in the Gokalpur (SC) constituency, fielding Ishwar Bagri in place of Pramod Kumar Jayant. The BJP is hopeful of "markedly improving" its performance in Dalit-dominated constituencies of the city on the basis of a sustained and focussed outreach campaign spread over months ahead of the February 5 assembly polls, party leaders said. The party failed to win even one of the 12 SC (scheduled castes) reserved constituencies in the assembly polls held in 2015 and 2020. Resentment surfaced on Sunday over ticket distribution for Delhi Assembly polls in the BJP, with a protest held outside its Delhi unit office and angry outburst by the outgoing MLA from Kaarwal Nagar who was not included in the candidates list. A group of protesters from Tughlakabad in South Delhi held a dharna at the gate of Delhi BJP office, demanding a change in the candidate from the constituency. Light rain was witnessed in parts of Delhi on Saturday evening as the city recorded a low of 7.7 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department. Forty-five trains were delayed as a thick layer of fog engulfed the city in the morning, reducing visibility which impacted train operations, officials said. The maximum temperature settled as 17 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, the IMD said. Parts of the national capital, including the Central Delhi area, received light rain. According to the weather department, Safdarjung observed minimum visibility of 50 metre from 12.30 am to 1.30 am which improved thereafter becoming 200 metre and continues to remain so 7.30 am. The CAG has projected a loss of Rs 2,026 crore due to the Delhi government's excise policy, and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has not tabled the report in the assembly to hide its misdeeds, the BJP claimed on Saturday. Delhi's per capita income in 2023-24 at Rs 4,61,910 was the third highest after Goa and Sikkim in the country, according to the latest statistical handbook. The document showed that the per capita of the city was more than double the national level per capita income of Rs 1,84,205. The handbook issued annually by the Delhi government details various socio-economic, demographic and infrastructure related data of the national capital. The handbook noted a 7.4 per cent yearly growth in the per capita income of the city. It showed a major decline in the number of vehicles on the national capital's roads from 1.22 crore in 2020-21 to 79.45 lakh in 2022-23. The number of schools in Delhi declined from 5,666 in 2020-21 to 5,497 in 2023-24. However number of enrolled students rose slightly for both, the boys and girls, during the same period.
