DGCA orders special audit of chopper services in U'khand to check accidents

Aviation safety regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered special audits/enhanced surveillance into helicopter operations involved in shuttle services in Uttarakhand following a spate of "occurrences" involving choppers during the Char Dham Yatra, according to an official statement on Monday. As a precautionary measure, DGCA is also reviewing the necessity of "curtailing" helicopter operations to Char Dham if required, it said. On June 7, six people, including the pilot, had a narrow escape last Saturday when a Kestrel Aviation helicopter on its way to Kedarnath made an emergency landing on the highway in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand after developing a technical snag during take-off. DGCA has also intensified its oversight of Char Dham helicopter operations by actively monitoring live camera feeds provided by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) at Kedarnath, it said. Recently, multiple occurrences involving helicopter operati

DGCA issues advisory as Pak's airspace closure extends flight timings

Aviation watchdog DGCA on Saturday issued an advisory to airlines on providing proper communication and in-flight catering services to passengers as international flights are having longer flying time due to the Pakistan airspace closure. Pakistan has closed its airspace for Indian airlines, resulting in longer flying hours for their international flights, especially those flying out from north Indian cities, including Delhi. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued an advisory on passenger handling measures in view of airspace restrictions resulting in extended flight durations and technical stops. The advisory focuses on five main areas -- pre-flight passenger communication, in-flight catering and comfort, medical preparedness and alternate aerodromes, customer service and support readiness, and intra-departmental coordination. DGCA said that due to recent developments involving international airspace closures and overflight restrictions, airline operations hav

Parl Panel urges AI airfare regulation, stronger DGCA powers on pricing

A parliamentary panel has recommended a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven "stringent" airfare pricing regulation mechanism for monitoring airfares, saying the current regulatory framework under the DGCA "lacks" the capacity to proactively regulate them. The Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture in its 375th report "Demands for Grants (2025-26) Of Ministry of Civil Aviation" also recommended that the DGCA be empowered with quasi-judicial authority to impose temporary price caps or penalties on airlines engaging in "exploitative" practices. The panel, headed by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, in its report, has also recommended developing a mobile application, "Airfare Vigil," on the lines of the cVIGIL mobile app of the Election Commission, to empower citizens to report instances of "arbitrary airfare pricing". The timeline for implementation should span 18-24 months, with Phase I focusing on high-traffic routes within six months and .
