Not much damage by cyclone Fani in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee

Except for damaging a few huts, cyclone Fani did not cause much havoc in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said as the severe cyclonic storm weakened Saturday morning and headed towards neighbouring Bangladesh. While flight operations resumed at the Kolkata airport at 9.57 am, train services on the Sealdah and Howrah sections are also getting back to normal. The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) also resumed its routine operation this morning at both Haldia and Kolkata docks. "The entire administration was awake the whole night. We were very worried about the cyclone Fani," Banerjee said. Banerjee had cancelled her election programmes and stayed put at Kharagpur in West Midnapore district to monitor the situation arising out of the cyclone. "There were not much damage in the state. At least 850 mud houses in the districts were partially damaged while 12 were completely destroyed," she said. Banerjee said the state government will extend help to people whose houses have been damaged .

Cyclone Fani uproots trees, triggers rain in West Bengal

Rain lashed Kolkata as cyclone Fani hits West Bengal by crossing Kharagpur earlier on Saturday. Trees were uprooted in towns in coastal West Bengal including Digha, Mandarmani, Tajpur, Sandehskhali and Contai as the storm surge forward.After crossing Kharagpur, it moved further in North-East direction with approximately a wind speed of 90 km/hour. BJP LS candidate Shantanu Thakur hospitalised after road accident

Shantanu Thakur, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate from Bongaon has been hospitalised after he met with a road accident on Saturday near North 24 Parganas's Jagulia area.Thakur sustained injuries when the car he was travelling in met with an accident. He has been taken to Bangaon Medical College and Hospital where he's being treated of his injuries.Further details are currently awaited.Thakur is the grandson of Binapani Devi, who died in March 2019.

Turkmenistan airlines to resume flights to Europe: carrier

Turkmenistan's national air carrier has scheduled flights to the United Kingdom and Germany again following a ban imposed by European Aviation Authorities. It was unclear Saturday if the ban dating back to February had been lifted. But flights to the English city of Birmingham and Germany's Frankfurt beginning on June 1 appeared on Turkmenistan Airlines' schedule late Friday. Flights were not listed to Paris, another destination the airline flew to regularly. "We have no confirmation regarding Paris," a Turkmenistan Airlines spokesman told AFP on Saturday. Cyclone 'Fani': Indian Navy launches rescue and rehabilitation effort in Odisha

In the aftermath of the devastation caused by severe Cyclone 'Fani', the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy has launched a massive rescue and rehabilitation effort in Odisha. Two Maritime Recce sorties were undertaken by the Dornier aircraft of the Navy revealing widespread destruction localised around the temple town of Puri, according to an official statement. The Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command personally undertook aerial survey of the cyclone affected area Saturday morning and visited INS Chilka to review the relief efforts, it said. Cyclone Fani leaves 12 dead in Odisha, relief work underway

A day after the "rarest of rare" summer cyclone Fani ravaged parts of Odisha, killing at least 12 people, a massive restoration-and-relief work was launched on war-footing on Saturday across 10,000 villages and urban areas, officials said. The extremely severe cyclonic storm, which made landfall at Puri on Friday, unleashed copious rain and windstorm that gusted up to 200 kmph, blowing away thatched roofs of houses, swamping towns and villages, before weakening and entering West Bengal, they said. Hyundai starts emergency road service to aid cyclone affected customers

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) said Saturday said it has stationed a dedicated emergency road service team to support the Fani cyclone affected customers or vehicles in the states of Odisha and West Bengal. 'Fani' caused extensive damage to power, telecom; rail and air connectivity restored

Cyclone 'Fani' has caused extensive damage to telecommunications and power infrastructure in Puri, Bhubaneswar and some other areas of Odisha, while rail and air connectivity to the state is getting restored Saturday, the Centre said. The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), headed by Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha,reviewed rescue and relief operations in cyclone-hit areas of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, a day after the 'extremely severe cyclone' made a landfall in Odisha. "Odisha informed that extensive damage to telecommunications and power infrastructure had been caused in Puri, Bhubaneswar and other areas. However, due to advance precautionary measures taken and large scale evacuation, the loss of human lives was minimal," an official statement said. EC go-ahead for sanctioning of drinking water schemes in Maha

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has allowed the Maharashtra government to sanction and implement drinking water supply schemes in areas where election is over. However, the ECI letter of May 2 added, there should be no "undue publicity" of the work for political gains. The voting for Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra ended with the fourth phase on April 29. The state government had written to the ECI on April 24, seeking permission to sanction and implement drinking water supply schemes in view of the Model Code of Conduct. Drought has been declared in 151 out of 358 talukas in the state. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had chaired a cabinet meeting where the drought situation and the steps taken to provide relief to people were reviewed. According to official data, 4,774 tankers are currently supplying water to 12,116 villages in the state. There are 1,264 fodder camps catering to nearly 8.5 lakh livestock.
